Curry is now effectively the national cuisine of Britain, and it's the perfect food for a big, informal dinner party. If you love being a host but don't particularly like cooking, you can arrange an amazing feast by getting each of your guests to bring a starter and a main course, either home-cooked or bought from the takeaway. You can then set up an enormous buffet from which your guests can help themselves. Deck your house out Bollywood style, with lots of silky drapes, cushions, incense burners and Hindu gods. Slap some sitar sounds on the stereo, and you'll have the perfect curry-eating environment.
Loose clothing is a must. If you're intending to indulge in some serious curry eating, the last thing you need is to be pulling yourself into those skinny jeans with the snug waist or that figure-hugging top — there’ll be buttons popping flying around the room like bullets. Instead, go for a floaty look with plenty of room for swelling. A belt with a few spare notches would also be a help. If you're feeling especially adventurous, make your guests dress up in full-on Bollywood garb, with colourful saris and collar-less suits.
It’s mainly about the eating. When everyone's ready, boil up a load of rice and heat up the curry dishes. Set the buffet up on the biggest surface you have, then either get everybody around a table or eating off their laps in the living room. You may want to prepare some activities for after the eating marathon has been completed, but remember that most people are going to feel like swollen heifers about to give birth to calves, so don’t set up anything too strenuous. Volleyball = bad. Board games = good.
In addition to all that curry, you might want to prepare some papadums to keep your guests happy until the real eating begins. You can fry these in a shallow pan filled with very hot oil, or a safer bet is to stick them in the microwave.
You're probably not going to need much by way of puddings, but buy some ice cream just in case anybody's got any space left.
Indian beers like Kingfisher and Cobra are designed to be drunk with spicy food and aren't too gassy (you don't want anything that'll make you more bloated than you already are). Alternatively, a lassi is the best possible drink for killing that chilli burn. To make a sweet lassi, whip up natural yoghurt, water and sugar in a blender until it's frothy. | |
