In recent years, the karaoke night has lost its way. Who really wants to listen to a group of drunk accountants belting out "The Boys Are Back in Town" in a smelly pub? But take the basics of karaoke and throw in a load of high class glamour and you end up with a different beast altogether. We call it Glamour:oke. Clever, eh?
When we put together our Glamour:oke party to celebrate the launch of Evite.co.uk, we took over one of the most glamorous clubs (The Embassy) in London’s most exclusive district (Mayfair — you don’t get to the top of the Monopoly board for nothing). The Embassy has a beautiful, well dressed crowd — the bouncers are capable of turning you away for the colour of your shoelaces or the cut of your eyebrows. A standard karaoke venue this most certainly is not.
For your own Glamour:oke party, you might not find somewhere quite as swanky, but you should be able to book a suitable venue. Just make sure you have a red carpet, a dancefloor and a bit of a stage. Oh, and a really big glitterball.
With Glamour:oke it’s all about the, well, glamour really. But we’re talking big, camp, vampy glamour here — think National Soap Awards rather than Audrey Hepburn.
We want heels, sparkles, tit-tape and plenty of leg. Hair is good. Really big hair is better. And really big hair with loads of glitter is perfect. You want the kind of outfit that looks sexy at the start of the night and downright pornographic when you’re being poured drunkenly into a taxi with paparazzi flash bulbs popping all around you.
For the boys it should be good designer togs and just the right amount of stubble. Don’t try too hard though — nobody’s really going to notice you, are they?
Glamour:oke requires two main strands — karaoke and a touch of celebrity sparkle. With one of the UK’s top party organisers running the show, putting these elements together for our party was a piece of cake.
But you shouldn’t find it too difficult to reproduce. The karaoke element is easy to source — go online or take a look in Yellow Pages.
'Celebrities' aren’t all that hard to get hold of either. In fact, they probably have their own Yellow Pages category too. There are more Big Brother contestants and cable channel presenters in London than there are taxi drivers. Just tell them there’ll be photographers there, breathlessly suggest that Kate and Sienna are coming along (just don’t specify exactly which ones), hint at a few free drinks and watch them flock to you.
Alternatively, you could just get all your friends to pretend to be celebrities instead. All they’ll need is a spangly dress and a slight air of desperation.
Once everything’s in place, pump up the volume and start belting out the tunes. We were lucky — we had stars of West End musicals to grace the microphone. Debbie from your accounts department might not quite measure up, but hell, it’ll be fun watching her try.
Food is by no means essential for a Glamour:oke. If you are going to lay food on, think in terms of posh little canapés. You don’t want anything that’ll damage the fit of your clothes, and you certainly don’t want to be spilling gravy down your frock.
Mainly champagne, obviously. You’re not going to look particularly glamorous with a pint of mild are you?Our guests at The Embassy got through absolute vats of the stuff.
Good quality cocktails will also just about pass muster. For our party we put together the Evitini — a mix of champagne (of course), vodka and lychee. For the drivers, a posh fruity cocktail in a champagne flute provides the perfect alternative. | |
