When it comes to a successful Wii party, it’s less about what you put on the walls than where you put the furniture. For instance, you may want to push that big coffee table out of the way so you and your friends have plenty of room for bowling, batting, ducking and weaving or whatever Wii activity the night may bring. The more space the better.
Also, don’t forget the fans. Half the fun of Wii is watching people in action, so be sure to create a comfortable viewing area. Set up chairs or pillows near the TV screen so everybody can have a front-row view of all the action.
Comfort is key, so choose clothing that allows a full range of movement. Stick with stuff like t-shirts, jeans, trainers or bare feet.
To really get your game on with Wii Sports, go over-the-top with some serious athletic gear, such as sweatbands for your wrists and head, sports jerseys or maybe even a referee whistle. If you're playing a particular sports game, dress the part — crisp whites for tennis, bowling shirts for a bowling match, and batting gloves for baseball.
Playing a team tournament? Choose team colours and names before the party so you can dress the party and really show your team spirit.
Set up multiple Wii systems and host a full-on Wii tournament. Players can compete individually or in teams, depending on the game. Create a big scoreboard using poster board or a dry-erase board so everyone can keep track of the standings. Throughout the tournament, have guests vote on players' performances in various categories, and then award prizes to the winners.
Some categories to get you started:
• MVP of each game
• best all-around Wii player
• best Wii Remote wielder
• best Wii style
• spazziest Wii moves
• best team (parent/child, siblings, couples, friends, etc.)
• most likely to continue playing after the party ends
For new players, start the evening with a Mii styling session, where guests can design their Mii characters. Award a special prize to the person who creates the most perfect Mii likeness.
Get creative with your party food. Serve a culinary homage to your favorite video games or characters. Stuffed mushrooms and pizza are perfect for a Mario party. If Rayman Raving Rabbids is the theme, get your revenge by serving rarebit (also known as Welsh rabbit), a delicious snack made with melted cheese on toast. And of course, any Wii Sports baseball tourney screams for All-American popcorn, peanuts and hot dogs.
Naturally, a steady supply of energy bars and trail mix will help keep players pumped and at the top of their game. Keep energy drinks and a large water jug on the sidelines, too, so your guests can stay refreshed and ready for the next round.
